Consorzio di tutela della Ciliegia di Vignola IGP

The path to obtaining the Protected Geographical Indication began in 2000 and ended in October 2012, with the publication of the Ciliegia di Vignola PGI recognition in the European Official Journal.

2013 saw the start of the first PGI campaign, with around 500 operators in the supply chain (producers, packers and packaging centres) adhering to the Control Plan; operators must carefully follow the Production Regulations. At the end of the campaign, the Consorzio di tutela della ciliegia di Vignola IGP (Consortium for the Protection of the Ciliegia di Vignola PGI) was established with the participation of 160 founding members. The Consortium is a non-profit organisation and is mainly involved in brand and production protection, promotion and quality control.

There are more than 400 farmers currently adhering to the Ciliegia di Vignola PGI Control Plan and the production area covers about 500 hectares; 30% of production is obtained from undercover plants to avoid rain damage and to be present on the markets even in adverse weather conditions; there are 13 packaging centres and the product cannot be processed outside the production area.

Between 60 and 70,000 quintals of cherries are produced in the area, of which around 70 per cent are currently labelled PGI; the product is mainly destined for the domestic market and fresh consumption. The cerasicola campaign begins around 15-20 May and ends roughly in the third week of July; the breadth of the commercial calendar is ensured by the presence of varieties with different agronomic and commercial characteristics, both early-ripening and late-ripening, which are all characterised by a high standard of quality. During the harvest period, consumers can find our cherries on the market in the Consortium's packaging, in 500 g, 2 kg, 3 kg and 5 kg weights.

The Protection Consortium manages promotion and marketing activities, with the aim of keeping consumer interest in our excellence high; during the campaign, the Consortium carries out training and control activities at the various stages of production, packaging and marketing, to guarantee the origin and quality of the product.
