Consorzio Tutela Aceto Balsamico di Modena

Founded in 1993, on the initiative of a group of Modenese producers, with the aim of achieving Protected Geographical Indication recognition, which was obtained in 2009. In 2014, the Consortium was officially entrusted with the protection of Aceto Balsamico di Modena PGI by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.

Having obtained the PGI denomination and recognition from Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, the Consortium is growing its activities. In particular, it acts on three distinct levels:

  • it monitors the market and is committed to defending Aceto Balsamico di Modena from imitative products;
  • alongside the Ministry, it studies and implements the regulation of production aspects and controls;
  • it promotes the product and its characteristics.

The commercial control activity, which essentially concerns the correct labelling and presentation of the product and the fight against imitative and evocative products, is carried out by the Consortium itself: it is taken care of by supervisors qualified as public security agents, in collaboration with the competent public forces.

It is also the task of the Protection Consortium to promote awareness of Aceto Balsamico di Modena and to disseminate its culture, both through direct dialogue with end consumers and with the media, as well as by taking part in trade fairs and events.
For this purpose and in order to protect the product, even on the most distant markets, the Consortium is a member of national and international bodies, such as OriGIn Italia, OgiGIn and Qualivita.

Growing over time, from the initial 12 producers, the Protection Consortium now includes 50 companies in the production chain of Aceto Balsamico di Modena, guardians of a long tradition. Consortium members also include the historical brands of the sector, which have contributed to the success of the product both in Italy and on the international markets since the beginning of the 20th century.

Aceto Balsamico di Modena has a certified production of more than 90 million litres per year, with a production turnover of more than 370 million euros and a consumption turnover of over one billion euros. Ninety-two per cent of the production of Aceto Balsamico di Modena is exported: today the product is marketed in 120 different countries and is one of the main ambassadors of Italian food excellence in the world.
